Why numbering should begin at zero

Image
To denote the subsequence of natural numbers 2, 3, ..., 12 without the pernicious three dots, four conventions are open to us a) 2 ≤  i  < 13 b) 1 <  i  ≤ 12 c) 2 ≤  i  ≤ 12 d) 1 <  i  < 13 Original Note by  Dijkstra Are there reasons to prefer one convention to the other? Yes, there are. The observation that conventions a) and b) have the advantage that the difference between the bounds as mentioned equals the length of the subsequence is valid. So is the observation that, as a consequence, in either convention two subsequences are adjacent means that the upper bound of the one equals the lower bound of the other. Valid as these observations are, they don't enable us to choose between a) and b); so let us start afresh. There is a smallest natural number. Exclusion of the lower bound —as in b) and d)— forces for a subsequence starting at the smallest natural number the lower bound as mentioned into the realm of the unnatural numbe...

INTRODUCTIONS, PART ONE

Image
…INTRODUCTIONS, Pt. 1 “How shall we begin?” Let us see. Um, turns out this is not easy to do right. Suppose you have two strangers. You want them to work together for a long time, even years, ceremoniously making great software. One is The Bespoken Consultant. Proud of their shoes in every way. Then we have the Computer Guru. Crafty, tenured.   How do we mix them well. What is important to say. Who is to say what, and in what order. How do we leave any politics out the door. How do we focus together on the matter at hand. This is not going to assist in the matter of focusing on the matter at hand.  The Twilight Zone — To Serve Man In this screenshot from To Serve Man, an Alien struggles to say Hello to Humans and vice versa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOrnVJ23aLQ (the link goes to a youtube page, with the Twilight Zone) Disappointment is hope in despair. Things I'll Do If I Ever Become an Evil Overlord

Image
If I Were The Evil Overlord... After I captures the hero's super-weapon, I will not immediately disband my legions and relax my guard because I believe whoever holds the weapon is unstoppable.  After all, the hero held the weapon and I took it from him. All bumbling conjurers, clumsy squires, no-talent bards, and cowardly thieves in the land will be preemptively executed; all annoying and/or humorously clever robots and androids will be destroyed; and it shall be declared a capital crime to be the "town drunk".  The hero will certainly give up and abandon his quest if he has no handy source of comic relief. All deathtraps will have only one way in or out, with any way out leading to an even more cunning deathtrap that works faster. All guards (and other workers) will be entitled to three weeks paid vacation a year after one full year's employment, will be covered (after that same period) by comprehensive medical and dental insurance (paid by m...
