Recipe: Luscious Tandoori Lamb Chops

INGREDIENTS
8 lamb rib chops (2 1/2 pounds)
3/4 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
One 3-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and minced
4 large garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon malt vinegar
1 tablespoon garam masala
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground mace (optional)
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Kosher salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Using a paring knife, cut a few 1/4-inch-deep slashes in each lamb chop. In a large bowl, whisk the yogurt with the heavy cream, lemon juice, ginger, garlic, malt vinegar, garam masala, cumin, paprika, cayenne, mace, nutmeg and 1 teaspoon of salt. Transfer the lamb chops to the marinade and turn to coat, then cover and refrigerate overnight.
Add the oil to the marinade and toss with the lamb chops. Remove the chops from the marinade and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
Light a grill. Season the chops with salt and grill over moderately high heat for 8 minutes, turning once, until well browned. Brush both sides of the chops with the melted butter and grill for another 2 minutes per side for medium-rare.

6 cups breadcrumbs

4 1/2 tablespoons dried oregano

2 Tablespoons fennel, ground

2 carrots, chopped
3 medium onion, chopped
15 garlic cloves, minced

mix this
9 large eggs, beaten to blend
1.5 cup dry red wine
1/8 cup Dijon mustard
1/4 cup stone ground dijon mustard
1/4 cup honey mustard
3/4 cup barbecue sauce

a few sprigs of thyme
8 bay leaves

2.5 pounds bacon, cooked

no salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper after 20m in oven

preparation

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Place the bacon in a medium sauté pan over medium-low heat. Sauté the bacon for about 5 minutes, or until it has begun to crisp and most of the fat has rendered out.

Combine first 8 ingredients in two bowls. Gently mix in the sauce, eggs, and wine. Using your hands, gently work all of the ingredients into the meat until well combined.

Place one-half of the croutons into a shallow baking dish at least 14 inches long. Place meat mixture on large rimmed baking sheet and shape into 16x4-inch loaf. Pierce the meatloaf with the bay leaves and thyme sprig. Bake meat loaf until cooked through and thermometer inserted into center registers between 160°F and 170°F, about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Anamika's Chilly Paneer

This is an awesome recipe from my friend Anamika, who runs the delicious Kasa restaurant. Back in 2004, I took her Indian cooking classes to shore up that need, but now that she's a famous chef and restaurateur, her schedule is tight. Every now and again, she offers a class, which I highly recommend.

Ingredients

Paneer – 1 packet – sliced
Red Bell Pepper – 1 – sliced
Green Chillis, finely chopped – 4
Soy Sauce – 2 tbsp
Vinegar – 1 tbsp
Plain flour – 2 tbsps
Cornstarch – 3 tbsps
Black Pepper, freshly ground – 1 teaspoon
Green Onions, finely chopped – 2 bunches
Garlic, finely chopped – 2 tbsp
Ginger, finely chopped – 2 tbsp
Sugar – pinch
Oil to fry
Salt to taste

Instructions
1. Mix the paneer with the plain flour, 2 tbsp cornstarch, black pepper, ginger and soy sauce.
2. Fry the paneer pieces in hot oil and drain.
3. For the sauce, heat a little oil in a pan, add most of the spring onions, bell pepper and garlic pieces and fry until light brown. Make a paste with remaining cornstarch and a little water and keep aside.
4. Add about 2 cups to the pan. Once it starts boiling, add cornflour paste and stir to thicken. At this point, add the vinegar, sugar and salt to taste. Add the paneer and cook for a few minutes.
5.Garnish with the remaining green onions

Reading List for Survivalists

Recently I came across a blog post that had a list of (physical) books that would be important to have on hand just-in-case. It reminded me of the beautiful work by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven, Lucifer's Hammer, in which a comet slams into the earth and the ensuing struggle of survival is documented in gorgeous detail.

The tone of life after "Hammerfall" is one where those who do not have valuable professions for a world without power or civilization are relegated to being manual laborers, regardless of their socioeconomic status or profession before the Fall.

One of the interesting things woven throughout the book is a subtle dropping of a list of books. I'll include that list in a follow-up post here, so watch this space. For now, here is the aforementioned blog post, from codenameinsight:

Shutdown Services Script for Sharepoint

Based on the blog post by Rafelo "Stopping and Restarting WSS 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 (MOSS)" I wrote a quick cmd script to automate the hunt-and-peck task of shutting each of these SharePoint services down one by one.

Why ever would we do this? In my case, I'm refreshing the content in the pre-production environment with the production content - and using a database restore of the related content databases to do this. SQL Server requires exclusive access to the database in order to overwrite it from a backup, so this is a pretty good way to drop all connections from the SharePoint IIS webserver.
And here is the script to bring it all back up (in the opposite order)

Making the mundane a trifle less mundane, one script at a time.

c# script to delete very large second stage recycle bin items in sharepoint 2007

In SharePoint 2007, when item versioning is set to no limit for a document library, you could easily have a spiraling content database size. When you try delete a ginormous item, it'll eventually get stuck in the second stage recycle bin, and you'll never be able to reclaim that database space or file space - a forced purging of the recycle bins through a UI operation will time out eventually, rolling back a huge transaction, probably freezing the site for your users - cue fire and brimstone.

The solution is to run the following script off-hours. Off hours helps minimize any potential blocks SQL server may issue against database pages as it goes around deleting the row content from alldocversions - from what I can tell, many I/O Page Latch locks are issued when SQL is deleting blobs, so to be nice to this script and run it off hours. Compile it into a c# console application referencing the sharepoint dll. There isn't much for progress reporting included in the script, but if you can figure out how many rows you are removing from alldocversions, you can keep issuing the t-sql command 'sp_helpdb alldocversions' to keep a tab on the progress.

sharepoint trick to edit "new item form" by adding to url

Hide columns on NewForm, DispForm, EditForm in SharePoint list

To remove columns from appearing on a display, edit item, and new item form in SharePoint lists, e.g.:

The goal is to add some JavaScript into a Content Editor Web Part (CEWP) on the above page.

To add web parts to any page within Sharepoint:
On the URL of the form page you are, add to the end of it: &toolpaneview=2 (i.e. Or remove all the stuff (querystring) stuff at the end of URL and change it to DispForm.aspx?toolpaneview=2. The page will then change to Edit Mode:

From here, add a CEWP, content editor web part, to the page UNDER the form already on the page. This is very important, if will not work if the CEWP is not under the form. Modify the CEWP, open the source editor, and paste in:

Win 7 & SharePoint fix: webdav Explorer (windows explorer view's) slow performances issue

Since upgrading any client to Windows 7, SharePoint's Windows Explorer view got really really slow. Guess what, it has to do with IE 8's (maybe IE7 too) automatic proxy detection, not SharePoint. You might experience this slowness connecting to any webdav server, including my iPhone's.

Here is the fix:

In Internet Explorer, open the Tools menu, then click Internet Options.
Select the Connections tab.
Click the LAN Settings button.
Uncheck the “Automatically detect settings” box.
Click OK

Grilled Thick Lamb Chops with Stout-Citrus Glaze

Time: 45 minutes

1 cup stout of your choice

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon grated lemon zest

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Salt

8 thick (about 1 1/2 inches) lamb rib or loin chops

2 tablespoons olive oil

Black pepper.

1. Combine stout, vinegar, lemon zest, lemon juice and salt in a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium and simmer vigorously until reduced to about 1/4 cup syrup, 20 to 25 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, build a fire on one side of a grill. When fire has died down, and coals are medium-hot (you can hold your hand 5 inches above grill grate for about 2 seconds), move enough coals to other side of grill to form a single layer, leaving most coals on hot side.

3. Rub lamb with oil, sprinkle generously with salt and pepper, place directly over hot part of grill and sear well, about 2 minutes a side. Move chops to cooler side of grill. Brush side facing up with glaze and cook for 4 minutes; turn over, brush other side generously with glaze and cook about 4 minutes more for medium-rare. To check for doneness, make a 1/4-inch cut in thickest part of one chop; it should be slightly less done than you like it.

4. Remove chops from grill, cover them loosely with foil, and let rest for 5 minutes. Brush again with glaze just before serving.

Curry leaves
Vermicelli (roasted)
Cumin
Fennel
Salt
Oil

Method :

Mix channa dal, salt, chopped onion, chopped green chillies, chopped ginger, chopped garlic and chopped curry leaves.
Roll into balls
Coat with roasted vermicelli and flatten into cakes
Deep fry in hot oil
Serve with a chutney dip

Locking down Actions in SharePoint 2007 like Edit in Datasheet, Export to Spreadsheet

Among the many requests we get to compose or decompose some of the basic functionality built into SharePoint 2007 - we get this one a lot. For some very valid business reasons, Edit in Datasheet or Export to Spreadsheet (Excel / Access) violate some of the metadata rules or workflow customizations that may affect metadata. I think this is due to the lack of robust field level security tied out to the users or groups in SharePoint. It's not too hard to build this into SharePoint (most serious web applications have field level security), and I've even helped build field level security into a few widely employed web applications. So maybe its due to something else. Either way, to disable the functionality, you basically gut SharePoint's webservices from the set of users you want to lock it down for.

Go to [your site] > Site Settings > Permissions > Permission Levels

Note: to do this for a single list, break permission inheritance at the list, then apply the new Permission Level to the Groups or Users that you want to restrict

Add a permission level or click on an existing permission level (to copy to a new permission level as a template)
Remove the following permissions from the list

Use Remote Interfaces - Use SOAP, Web DAV, or SharePoint Designer interfaces to access the Web site. (To stop the people from linking to the list with Access, etc.)
Use Client Integration Features - Use features which launch client applications. Without this permission, users will have to work on documents locally and upload their changes. (To remove Edit in Datasheet. This also removes Export to Spreadsheet)

There are other ways involving the javascript jquery library that I'm not as fond of here. Doug Ware from Elumenotion wrote up a few choices, and is on point with his write up.

Upgrading custom sharepoint 2007 workflows in progress

From what research I've done, it seems safe to upgrade (via solution deployment) previously associated, deployed, and running SharePoint 2007 Custom Workflows (developed in Visual Studio) that are In Progress.

The two key areas why I think this works is to do with the content that SharePoint hydrates each time a workflow moves into and out of memory. In old-fashioned programmer speak, the program section and data section are saved with each instance of a workflow. In current lingo, I understand Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) is used to represent SharePoint workflow objects in XML thereby allowing the instances of all the data objects and the program code to be streamed into and out of memory in perpetuity. If you think about how challenging this is to accomplish, you'll understand why I really respect this aspect of SharePoint, and how it adds to the awesomeness of skill displayed by their development team.

Caveat emptor: dehydration and rehydration saves many things about the state of the workflow and the code of the workflow, but there could be nonserializable objects that your workflow may depend on that can change whilst the workflow is dehydrated (out of memory/not running). e.g. SPList is nonserializable. Worst case scenario, you'll have to prepare the business users to restart broken workflows.

Read more details on this in Chapter 9 of David Mann's awesome book Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System - Using workflow in SharePoint and Office 2007 to enforce and enhance business processes. I highly recommend this book for developers doing custom development on SharePoint Workflows. It's very well written, and a fun read (which is always tough with a deeply technical book).

Dhal with Spinach recipe

Dhal with Spinach by Juliana Madan (my mamma!)

1 cup of any kind of dhal -- cook in pressure cooker with the following
1/2 tsp tumeric
1/2 tsp cumin
1 chopped tomato
2 Jalepenoes sliced
You may need 1 or 1 & 1/2 cups of water to cook.
After 10 mins or slow turn off & let it cool
Add 1 or 2 bunches of chopped spinach into cooker & simmer till cooked.

For seasoning
Heat 2 TBSP oil
Add 1 tsp mustard seeds-- when they pop crackles add the following ingredients to the oil
2 red dry chillies
1 onion chopped
Pour on top of cooked dhal
Add coriander leaves for garnish

1 c chopped onion
2 tbsp olive oil
Few dry red chillis (break them in half if you really want the heat)
3 cloves garlic
1/2 c white vinegar
3/4 c packed brown sugar
1/3 c soy sauce
1/2 c chilli sauce
Heat oil. Fry chillis. Add onion, fry 5 mins, add rest of ingredients, bring to boil. Remove from heat, pour over ribs, bake at 350 for one hour. Baste couple times. Turn up to 500 at end and brown for two mins.

Regular expressions are a representation of a grammar that helps computers and programs interpret and validate human input. Unfortunately they are a huge time-suck and are a form of mental masturbation. But one person's poison is another's Picasso; some regular expressions are like poetry to the mathmatically-bent computer scientists, and great debate has ensued over the best interpretation of RFC822, the internet's email address specification.

Also, with the 16-Nov-2009 Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN's) move to accept multi-byte, internationalized top-level domain names (IDN/TLD), I wonder how many hosts will need to update their assumptions in their regex. Also I wonder what google mail, yahoo, amazon, ebay, facebook, or twitter might consider for their own RFC822 validation routines going forward.

Since there seems to be as many regular expressions developed and published as there are email addresses, I'll contribute what I've come across as well. We'll see how this evolves in 2010 when people start employing these new domain names.

I really love when a fix is simple.

Back story: in this case, I am in the midst of using a combination of wspbuilder and spsource to reverse engineer, package up and deploy a few custom content types. wspbuilder is a codeplex Visual Studio extension that helps package up SharePoint code into a Solution file (WSP) for deployment. spsource is another tool that tries to analyse a SharePoint site and tease out a schema.xml for a list, and column & field information for a content type. I use the term 'tries' because depending on how clean your dev environment is, your mileage may vary.

Problem description: when running WSPBuilder -> Build WSP, the output window in Visual Studio says

Could not load file or assembly 'CabLib, Version=6.9.26.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=85376ef9a48d191a' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.

It is my belief this problem is related to the installer not detecting/switching to the correct version of this DLL - there is an x86 version and an x64 version.

Fix:
[applicable to the wspbuilder.exe version 0.9.8.1029 file date apr 15 2009, 262kb] :
copy the x86 cablib.dll
from

Default Document Content Type always loading as Document

The problem statement is in MOSS 2007, when the user adds custom content types to an existing document library and then set them up to appear in the new document dropdown, MOSS still uses the default Document content type (though after saving, you can edit properties to set the correct content type - how undesirable!). Stephen Muller pointed me in the right direction for a fix, but mine differs slightly from his.

Solution:
Create a document library and set the default Document Template to None. i.e. do not select Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office Word 97-2003 template, etc.

After the document library is created, do this within the Document Library Settings:

Create Columns or Add from existing site columns
go Advanced Settings > Allow managment of Content Types=Yes,
then Add from existing site content types
then Change new button order and default content type and set the new content type up as #1 (for example)

Displaying workflow item information from a custom ASPX task form

When building custom workflows, often we want custom Task edit screens as well. A custom Task Content Type allows us to collect much deeper data than 'completed'. However, since we are ditching the default Task edit pages, we lose a couple of useful features; a link to the underlying Workflow item as well as the implied context of the Task.

Given the need to provide context to the user when overrriding the default task form, you may come across the desire to display some file information, custom columns/properties, links, etc on the task edit page.

To accomplish this, we need to gain two pieces of understanding:

How and when to modify ASPX page elements from the code-behind c# class
How to extract the underlying information from the Workflow's original item

These labels are placeholders that we can manipulate based on actions or events sent to the code-behind class. Now that we have the ability to modify the form in flight, this brings us to how we extract the workflow document data while editing a task.

The key is to build the correct SPWorkflow object - as it turns out, there are two constructors for this object. If you use the constructor based on the tasks' list item, all the information within the SPWorkflow object is relative to the Task List. So we want to use the SPWorkflow constructor with the SPWeb parameter.

Security and Audit Trail of Workflow Tasks in SharePoint 2007 & Visual Studio 2008

Two requests that are probably part of every SharePoint workflow design:

Permit only the users who are assigned a WF tasks to edit (i.e. complete) them
Record the user name of the person who completes a task (instead of the System Account)

Not suprisingly, neither of these pretty simple, seemingly obvious design concepts can be done out of the box / without some customization. Also, certain configuration screens might trick you into thinking you can do this directly within the SharePoint UI (you can't; more on this in the deeper blog posts).

At a high level, one would like to specify these widely useful features in the Workflow Settings screen or even within the Task List settings. I may eventually release this into an extension on codeplex so if someone might find this useful, let me know.

Admittedly, I've been lazy about just dropping code into blogger (unformatted), but now I'm glad to say that I've finally gotten around to adding a bit of css and javascript magic into the blogger template.

The syntax highlighter code is created and maintained by Alex Gorbatchev and to get it up and running quickly, I more or less used Carter Cole's instructional write up. After modifying the theme choice and putting the css and js on a host, we are cooking with a Foreman! Note, I'm using the standard distribution which includes a smaller set of brushes, whereas there are many more out there, and others in development.

Download the current distribution of the sytnax highlighter above, or decide if you are okay with letting someone else host that css & javascript for you

Workflow LogToHistoryList UserID and Task Activity Executor in SharePoint

This topic is within a SharePoint 2007 workflow, how do we get the Workflow History to reflect the user who modified a task, rather than the "System Account". I've successfully implemented the solution suggested by Julie Kramer, from the office dev blog. Here we go:

Assign a new field to the Executor property of the OnTaskChanged activity in question (you'll see this property in the property window on the activity). Note we use this new field in a later LogToHistoryListActivity's Method_Invoking() by assigning the UserID property of the LogToHistoryListActivity's object

Mustard seeds-- 2 tspn
Onions-- 2 large chopped fine
1" piece ginger
5 green chillies-- cut up
3 sprigs curry leaves
1/2 bunch coriander leaves
Salt & lemon juice-- for later

Method

1. Roast rava in a pan till you get the aroma from it & slightly changes color-- set aside.
2. Heat 1/4 cup oil in a pan.
3. When hot -- add mustard seeds.
4. You'll hear the crackle-- & cover it as it'll splutter.
5. Add chopped onions & curry leaves. Fry onions to a deep golden brown.
6. Add ginger, chillies & coriander leaves & fry a bit.
7. Add roasted rava & continue for a bit more.
8. Turn off heat-- cool it completly before packing it for the trip.

AT THE CAMP

Boil 2 cups water. Add salt to taste & then add in the upmav mixture & simmer for a couple of minutes. Add lemon juice for flavor.

Egg Masala

Do ahead
1 dozen eggs hard boiled with salt -- set aside

At home
Fry onions in a pan-- deep golden color. Add a bit of cloves & cinnamon. Add ginger & green chillies & fry. Add turmeric & chilli powder. Add tomatoes & coriander leaves. Cook dry & let it cool.

At the camp
warm up onion masala & halve boiled eggs & cook it all together.
** Could add extra canned tomatoes if needed.

IE8 follows the FF path and has a customizable Search Toolbar that can be plugged into a SharePoint instance. Start by clicking on the “Find More Providers” menu item on the drop down in the IE8 search toolbar area.

On the bottom of the Providers screen you can find a link: “Create your own Search Provider”. Seemingly inexplicably, SharePoint will less than always cooperate. In this case, it happened after a major round of refactoring custom workflow solutions, but ULS logs and other debugging techniques were proving fruitless. After going through the various debugging tips posted on various blogs such as:

I found the solution was don't refactor so deeply, or really know when an XML attribute is referring to a library.classname or namespace.classname (OUCH, the subtlety).

e.g. in my case, workflow.xml's attribute for

CodeBesideClass = "unbudgetedBI_InitialApprovalWF.Workflow1"

then the workflow project (called "unbudgetedBI_InitialApprovalWF") has a workflow file called "initialapproval.cs" (with corresponding .rules and .desiginer.cs). Within this c# file is the namespace "unbudgetedBI_InitialApprovalWF" and a public class "Workflow1".

When trying to launch the workflow (after watching the submit_click method of the initation / instantiation form fire successfully within a debug session), the Site.WorkflowManager.StartWorkflow() does not cause an exception within the debugger, but the workflow status becomes "Failed on Start (retrying)".

ULS logs are chock full of valuable information, but most of it is irrelevant to the problem at hand, so I recommend changing the logging settings such that All events are ignored;

Central Administration > Operations > Diagnostic Logging Event Throttling. Category= All, Least critical event to report to the trace log= None. Press OK.

then, do it again but give yourself verbose logging for 'general';

What is this contenttype that is missing, we are left to wonder. What a wild goose chase that creates! So I'll spare you more heartache and headache and tell you simply: don't refactor too much. In this case, I changed the name of the workflow file within the project. Apparently the XML attribute CodeBesideClass refers not to a namespace.classname but to libraryname.classname AND a class name within the c# file should reflect the name of the file itself (but I am no c# guru).

So I changed the filename from "initialapproval.cs" back to the default "Workflow1.cs" and my workflow ran just fine.

At least this made me laugh:

Just over another hurdle in the SharePoint steeplechase. This one involves the glorious PeopleEditor control and how to make sure the user has some client-side feedback before they post their selection. Through the nest of blogs and comments about the general ASP.NET versus the universe of SharePoint problem, the best solution seems to revolve around hacking the client side javascript and doing the most manual processes imaginable to get consistent validation.

Precisely, I mean that within the PeopleEditor should support simple validation out of the gate, but the AllowEmpty property doesn't work (see Karine Bosch’s comments from this blog link). Then you end up going through the following failure steps before the aforementioned hack emerges as the winner:

Adding the ASP.NET RequiredFieldValidator element within the ASP form (shereen's blog link) #FAIL

Inserting a RequiredFieldValidator by override CreateChildControls() within the code-behind-form (see link to a blog SharePoint Solutions team, the "experts and pioneers on Microsoft SharePoint") sorry, another #FAIL, though from 2006
(Now we are getting closer.. ) A similar problem with a close kin of this SPControl is solved by Greg Galipeau in his post about SharePoint DateTimeControl Validation. But since it is a long day and I'm not getting any younger with all this chasing blog trails, #FAIL

Now the winning hack, by the same person Shereen (from #3 above) who got it right the second time - thanks for being an extremely passionate ninja and posting your updated solution (which I'm going to copy below incase it disappears one day into the digital ether)

This post is an update to a previous post I had written on validating the PeopleEditor control on post back. In that particular post, I described the challenges of getting a PeopleEditor control, within a custom application page, to validate correctly as a required field on the client side (I had server side validation already in place and
working correctly).

For the most part, the solution I outlined worked well,
except for some situations where other controls on the page were performing
their own post back (for example, a data grid in edit mode). I found that on
submit of the entire form, the ASP.NET required field validator for the
PeopleEditor control would kick in informing me that the field was required.
However, there was a valid entry in the control so I could only conclude that
the post back by some other control on the page was mucking up the view state
for the PeopleEditor control and on submit the form was no longer aware that
this field did in fact have a value in it.
The MSDN article found here outlines my problem exactly with the eventual solution further down in the thread. I just wanted to highlight it here because it was exactly what I needed to resolve my issue. Thank you to Jan Lange for posting his solution!

Just to outline, what Jan eventually did was create a custom validator that called a javascript function to validate the control. Within that function he checks to see if the control is empty and stores the results of the validation in the IsValid property of the ServerValidateEventArgs object. Notice that he also sets the ControlToValidate property to “”.

It seems like there are hundreds or thousands of people out there that have come across this little SharePoint sendemail bug. Beware this error message is a red herring! My suspicion is that through a series of unfortunate events around the sequencing / pipelining of workflow activities, the sendmail activity gets terminated prior to having a chance to become a fully dehydrated object. Postulations aside, here is the fix I used:

Observation 1 from 12's hive logs (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\LOGS):
w3wp.exe (..) 0x.. Windows SharePoint Services, General, 8kh7, High, Cannot complete this action. Please try again.

Observation 2 from Workflow History:
Error, System Account, The e-mail message cannot be sent. Make sure the outgoing e-mail settings for the server are configured correctly.

So I fixed my <sendmailobject>_MethodInvoking by binding the sendmail activity's email fields (to:, cc:, body:, etc) to class variables and then assiging those variables within the method_invoking for the sendmail activity.

MOSS removes the association between workflow tasks, history items and the workflow 60 days after the workflow has been completed through the workflow cleanup timer job for performance reasons. Consider this next suggestion a workaround for that bad design; most companies that develop custom workflows will want that history around for some time. Several alternatives are available, albeit brute-force methods, but the one I elected to go with is to place the following bit of configuration in the workflow.xml prior to associating a workflow.

As I was setting up a custom SharePoint workflow to work with an external user outside of the domain, I noticed some quirky behavior and error messaging from SharePoint.

e.g. it works if its a short piece of text like the MOSS 2007 SDK:

Whenever I get an error in the pile of logs that is SharePoint Workflow, I have to wonder how this made it through QA. Case and point: a message that returned when executing a CompleteTask activity within a workflow:

System.InvalidOperationException: Correlation value specified does not match the already initialized correlation value on declaration for activity .

This should equate to - check the correlation token you set, logically. It even seems like this is a logical conclusion from the top of procedure stack;

This makes it nice & spicy - reduce red chilly or green chilly if you can't take the heat

1 whole chicken
1.25c plain yogurt
2T lemon juice
1T vinegar
1T vegetable/olive oil
3T ginger, garlic, green chilly paste (= 1 large clove garlic, 1 green chilly, .25oz ginger ground together in pestle & mortar)
.75T garam masala
1.5T tandoori masala
2T red chilly powder
1t ground coriander seeds

Cooking instructions

clean & wash & dry chicken. prick with a forkadd yogurt to the chicken and mix well. add ginger, garlic, chilly paste to the chickenadd all dry spices (coriander seeds, garam masala, red chilly pounds, tandoor masala, and salt)add lemon juice, vinegar and oil. cover chicken and marinate for 24h.

Grill chicken on a BBQ, or broil chicken for 14 minutes per side (depending on oven, you'll likely need to leave the front oven door slightly ajar and rotate the broiling rack 90 degrees every 7 minutes to get a nice even tan)

Serve with sliced red onions, fresh corriander (aka cilantro), and lemon wedges (or make a mint chutney!).

Following Robert Shelton's well documented series on creating MOSS 2007 workflows in Visual Studio 2008, I ran across a bit of a snafu. Basically, his recommended dev machine setup stipulates WSS3, VS2008, etc. However the Visual Studio 2008 wizards/templates for Sequential Workflow expect MOSS, not WSS. The workaround should get me positioned to develop, debug, package and deploy workflows in VS2008.

I found the most complete workaround write-up on this issue on the Visual Studio SharePoint Tools Blog by Roger Best. Here is his writeup in full (in case the link stops working one day..)

If not you will get the message:
"SharePoint site location entered is not valid. The SharePoint site at http:///Docs could not be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. If the URL should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application."
Go ahead and finish wizard with what you need. Once the project has been created
2.) Remove the reference to Microsoft.Office.Workflow.Tasks
Now depending if you are coding in VB or C# you should
3a.) C# open workflow1.cs code editor and remove "using Microsoft.Office.Workflow.Utility;"
or
3b.) VB remove import of Microsoft.Office.Workflow.utility.
4.) Now we have to remove some xml from the feature.xml file specifically
- ReceiverAssembly="Microsoft.Office.Workflow.Feature, Version=12.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c"

After arm wrestling the 64 bit version of MOSS 2007 + Windows 2008 x64 + Visual Studio 2008 x64 (and Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 x64) , and LOSING - I was cornered into SharePoint Designer for development of workflows.

Now, I know the inefficiency I'm invoking by doing this - instance creation versus template creation! But deadlines beg, you know. So how pleased am I that when I eventually get my x86 (ow, what year is it? I think I've been writing for x86 platforms for something like 20+years, yikes) VM dev instance in HyperV up and running, I'll be able to reuse/import the SPD built workflow logic into Visual Studio.

The other nugget of the day is that I think I'll write up my findings of first release of Google Chrome for Mac OSX and the SharePoint experience. Chrome is built on webkit rendering, similar to Safari, so I imagine its pretty much a similar look & feel - but Chrome is supposedly faster. Maybe Microsoft will give even test for Chrome in Office 14 / SharePoint 10 and bestow the official "level 2" browser support.

This is Yet Another Blog on how to properly install & configure a SharePoint 2007 development client installation. I've read many different blogs and noticed pretty substantial inconsistencies and invariably most come to the conclusion that Your Mileage May Vary. Case and point, in my dev environment, I'm optimized for the current bleeding edge, and there is a whole lot of blood. Dev setup:

How to install MOSS 2007 SP2 on Windows 7 RC (build 7100)

Although this is not a supported scenario, there is a way to install MOSS 2007 onto Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100). Here are the steps:

Get the Installation Helper, created by Bamboo Nation.
Get the MOSS 2007 installation media and extract it to a temporary folder on your hard drive
Get the MOSS 2007 SP2 service pack: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B7816D90-5FC6-4347-89B0-A80DEB27A082&displaylang=en
Get the WSS 3.0 SP2 service pack: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=79BADA82-C13F-44C1-BDC1-D0447337051B&displaylang=en
Now you need to slipstream the installation packages (if you try to run the installer without SP2 slipstreamed, you will be blocked (KB 962935)

Locate the MOSS 2007 setup.exe in your installation folder.

After installing VS2008 pro on the sharepoint 2007 64 bit win2k8 server, I create a new SharePoint Sequential Workflow project and get the dreaded "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" dialog.

A similar project creation failure occurs using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 on the 64 bit MOSS 2007 server too. In the case of the newer IDE however, there is no dialog box, rather the status bar on the bottom says

Creating project 'SharePointWorkflow1'... project creation failed.

So it seems like the "plan" as indicated by the Program Manager is currently half implemented. The VS2010 Beta 1 actually shows these project templates to the user on a 64 bit environment (not according to plan), however the project creation fails (seemingly by design).

Is Microsoft really taking SharePoint ECM development seriously? e.g. at TechEd (a couple weeks ago), the keynote reinforced the 64-bit-everywhere mantra for MOSS, but this frustrating issue doesn't make that feel very near term.

There is one workaround that seems promising - the Workflow templates in WSPbuilder from CodePlex are supposed to work. I'll going to give that a shot next.

Once upon a time, a Sharepoint site quota snuck up on you. Users complained, Admins panicked, and no one could upload or make changes to their sites. After a couple of frustrated attempts to adjust a Quota Template (seemingly obvious answer), the admin realizes this path is in vain. Recycling the app pool, or even worse, the server does nothing to appease the angered users. Fear not, there is hope: these are the steps to change the effective site quota for a site in flight:

Open Central Admin
Open Application Management
Under SharePoint site management go to site collection quotas and locks - the breadcrumb trail should now read:
Central Administration > Application Management > Site Collection Quotas and Locks
Select a Site Collection (if you are editing a subsite, click the dropdown and select the Site Collection, even if it is already on the target site collection you are having a problem with)
(if you are editing a subsite quota) find the subsite URL or user’s personal site, and select it
(if you are editing a subsite) the Site Collection box should read e.g. http://my/personal/username
Under Site Quota Information at the bottom of the page, click the Current Quota Template dropdown to the right and select Individual Quota.
Adjust the effective quota to the desired limit and warning values. The changes take effect immediately. Verify effective quota by viewing the site's Site Settings > Storage Space Allocation e.g. http://my/personal/username/_layouts/storman.aspx

Applies to Sharepoint 2007.

One choice is to plan this ourselves or do let a tour operator do this, but tickets are done by lottery for them as well, so there is no guarantee that they get a ticket to the final, for example. So I think try to get a lottery ticket, if we don't succeed, then turn to a tour operator who may have tickets. Don't know what pricing/surcharge tour operators are in comparison to doing it ourselves. 3 million tourists over this month though, so I'm betting there will be lots to do and lots of big signs everywhere.

I'm setting between 5 or 10k for the overall trip cost; 3k for sports tickets, 2k for r/t airfare, then the rest for whatever fun comes along

possible agenda:
week 1: ~30 june arrive in cape town, rent car, explore cape town, table mountain, wine country, etc + see two games (QF & SF) 3 july & 6 july.

7 july travel across south africa by train (maybe on the luxurious blue train) or airplane - to Pretroria

week 2: experience jo'burg, see final 11 july, fly out of from jo'burg ~13 july
